ABSTARCT
This study was carried out on thesocioeconomic factors and political factors affecting students academic performance using secondary schools in Gusau metropolis, Zamfara State as case study. To achieve this, two significant research objectives were formulated. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of all the students of selected secondary schools in Gusau metropolis, Zamfara State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 170 respondents while 250 were received and all were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. The result of the findings reveals that there is a significant relationship between parent’s socio-economic status and academic performance of students. In likewise manner, there is also a significant relationship between government educational policies and student’s performance in learning process. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that the Government should always ensure that policies such as funding; free education, free lunchetc. are properly and timelyimplemented. Policies such like the free education will enable children whose parents cannot afford education gain free access to schools. Additionally, Government should provide textbooks and other learning materials required by secondary school learners in all secondary schools. And parents should have interest in their children’s education. This is because students would perform better academically with parent’s involvement.
